The most exclusive club in the world

My first introduction to the Exclusive Club was back in 1981, just before Christmas, when I was ‘invited’ to help decorate the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess at the Army Apprentice College in Harrogate. I was sixteen and remember it well.

My ‘friendly’ Troop Sergeant stood us all in a line and explained that, although we would be giving up some of our precious weekend, we would gain a valuable insight into the ‘Most Exclusive Club in the World’; the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess.

It must have been our bemused facial expressions that prompted him that an explanation was in order.

‘Gentleman you are about to enter the most Exclusive Club in the World, you cannot pay to join it you have to earn the right to become a member, some of you will make it, some of you won’t!’

Through my young eyes it looked a great place to be. Like many of my colleagues I did become a firm member of that exclusive club.
